31 December 2013

Review of the year - 2013 you have been good to us!

January// Sat on a plane, leaving my homeland and family after a wonderful, winter wonderland Christmas, what did 2013 have in store? Would we stay in SA longer than the year we had initially planned? In January 2103 I really had no idea how the family business would morph into what it has.
February// A shop that makes people talk, a shop that feels different, a shop whose interior surprises.  How would we create this?  Erecting rusty corrugated roof sheeting of course! With some pinterest inspiration a corner of the shop was transformed!

March// Our first trip to a trade show to find new stock... we found some brilliant suppliers and lovely products, yet I had mixed feelings.  Have a read - Imported Vs Proudly South African.
April// Choosing a name for the shop... this took some time.  Paper Moon, Place Settings and All Wrapped Up made the short list! Signs and logo designed, The Ruby Orchard was born. We invited friends, family, businesses and colleagues to our first big 'do'. Our official launch night was a such a success!
May// A trip back to the UK always inspires.  I wish I could ship containers full of products from my favourite places and designers.  We will keep working to provide you with products you don't see anywhere else! My inspiration often comes from English country cottages, Emma Bridgewater, Cath Kidston, Laura Ashley and other beautiful British designers.

June// We had gathered a few old pieces of furniture and workbenches to use as displays in the shop... however customers wanted to buy them! We started searching for other pieces that needed restoring and found a hidden Midlands talent to upcycle for us.  In June the furniture was in the workshop.
July// July saw the first pieces of furniture arrive... my father in law really wasn't sure that they would ever sell! Oh yee of little faith!  Old tool boxes converted into quirky storage benches, Old doors into stunning kitchen tables... this side of our business has grown immensely, we hope to continue to excite you with our before and after photos!

August// Our blog was born in August and told the story of how it all began.  Nicola Tweed joined The Ruby Orchard team too - she sells, searches for products, blogs and assists with marketing.   August saw us hunting markets for new and unique products - Rondavel soaps, Oak & Willow signs and beautiful Token Ceramics came on board.
September// We jumped at the chance of a last minute stand at the Garden & Leisure show in Pietermaritzburg.  An exhausting 3 days, but so worth meeting so many new customers.  Our framing business now closed the old framing workshop was stripped and fully decorated to transform The Ruby Orchard into an even lighter, brighter and airier space!

October//  With Nicola on board we headed to Durban for some creative brainstorming with Nadia Van der Mescht.  Armed with a bag of marketing strategies we have hit the web!
November// We have been featured - Garden & Home described us as the 'New kid on the decor store block'. Check our press page for our other blog and press features.    November also saw our second big event of the year - Christmas shopping evening. Wine, mince pies and shopping, Thank you to everyone who supported us.

December// Wow! Shoppers came from all over the Country.  Our online sales started to grow, we have not been able to stock the shop quick enough!  We have leant so much for next year.
A huge thanks to everyone who has supported us this year and to those who have supplied us.  Here's to an equally extraordinary 2014!
Goodbye 2013... you have been good to us... Hello 2014.

29 November 2013

Why we loved November

The Christmas countdown is about to begin. The rain in November reminds me of home, the tashes in November remind me of the 80s. What a month it has been, with only 26 days until Christmas you have been flocking to get an early start on your Christmas shopping and for that we thank you. Here's a look back at Novembers best bits.

1// November saw four special feature posts on some of our favourite suppliers and friends. Oak & Willow, Alice May, Bella Jo & John the Potter all answered our questions. Alice has had dinner with Heidi Klum (omg) and Bella Jo loves chicken necks and long shorts!

2// I had a fab, yet windy afternoon at I heart market, I spent too much, ate too much and loved it!

3// Our oh so popular scarves and vintage scales were back in stock. We had waiting lists for these so ordered plenty.  We still have stock for Christmas.

4// The Ruby Orchard got festive. Tying teeny tiny Christmassy ribbons on 200 cute laser cut decorations was actually quite therapeutic!  We also inspired you with some festive cookie ideas.

5// We sold a stack of furniture this month! 'A' frame shelving units, a vintage couch, tables, workbenches, you have been loving our quirky, upcycled pieces. We will continue to stock the shop with new items and keep our prices as reasonable as possible.

6// Our unofficial online store was launched  For those who live far away and are desperate for a piece of Ruby Orchardness in their home, we make a plan! We have sent scales, wine signs and scarves all over SA, Just ask!

7// Andrea from Clever bird banter visited The Ruby Orchard for the first time, I think she liked it, she has been back 4 times since ;-)  Andrea said 'there is literally not one item I would be unhappy with if I found it under the Christmas tree' in her blog post - Thankyou!  We are excited to be working with Andrea and her new venture - Babybird basics... watch this space.

8// We were featured! House and Leisure blog said our products have a 'country like feel' and Garden and Home magazine reported us as 'The new kid on the décor store block'! And a lovely lady wrote a letter to the local Witness to thank us. Amazingly proud.

9// The highlight of the month - 120 Christmas shoppers joined us for mulled wine, snacks and an evening of shopping.  WOW! What an awesome evening, the last shoppers headed home at 11pm! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you for supporting us.

10// We joined forces with Kim and Fil at Ruby & Swallow for a Christmas giveaway.  It was such a pleasure to answer a few questions for their local business post too.

We are staying open until the 24th December and have more stock on the way so don't stress!  Cheers to the silly season... let the countdown begin!

01 November 2013

Why we loved October

Is it just us or did October seem to zoom by rather quickly?! It seems like just yesterday we updated our desktop calendars to October and scheduled in our monthly meetings. October has been good to The Ruby Orchard, we've revamped our blog/site, put some big plans in place and had our best sales month so far since opening! Yay!

Here are some of our other October highlights....

1// Local 'celebrity' blogger, Keri Bainbourgh from Midlands Musing popped into the store for a spot of shopping and wrote these beautiful words about us... 'The Ruby Orchard is situated in an old renovated house with lots of light and air filtering into inter-leading rooms which are jam-packed with lovely (also read: reasonably price) decor, homeware and gifts'.

2// We went potty over over John the potters pottery... a yearly opportunity (we hope) to stock up on the most beautiful pottery from Betty's bay.

3// Hannah confessed her obsession to jugs... chunky milk jugs, teeny cream jugs, pretty sauce jugs, huge vase jugs, old looking jugs, new shiny jugs.... you name it! She really is obsessed!

4// Tracy Humphrey was our 'product in action' winner, submitting this beautiful picture of her rustic hook hanger. We love all the little trinkets hanging off it, simply gorgeous! Choosing the winner wasn't easy, Tracy had some stiff competition from the other entries!

5// October was the month our customers decided we offered a gift wrapping service... and for some reason it always seemed to be the odd shaped items that needed wrapping lol! Honestly we didn't mind but maybe it's something for us to look into and perfect our skills or maybe even your skills?! In the mean time we will try our best to wrap your pressies with all the beautiful gift wrap available.

6// By far our most popular blog post this month was Why SA Rocks! SA certainly does rock because you can get amazing steaks, fresh avocados, cheap wine & an endless amount of creative geniuses at I heart market.

7// Scribbles, ideas, plans and dreams all came together last week over a coffee, hot chocolate & tea with Nadia van der Mescht. We left feeling excited about the future of The Ruby Orchard... Ladies & Gents watch this space!

8// We scheduled in a night of mulled wine, mince pies & shopping to get you all into the festive spirit... yup Christmas is just around the corner! If would like to join us then please do RSVP as soon as possible, the event is on the 22nd November from 6:30pm - 9:00pm. All are welcome!
